Arijit Singh is a singer, composer and music producer, and critics describe him as one of the most influential and commercially successful voices in Indian music. He was born in Jiaganj, in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal, into a musical family. He trained from the age of three: in Indian classical music under Rajendra Prasad Hazari, in tabla under Dhirendra Prasad Hazari, and in Rabindra Sangeet and Western pop under Birendra Prasad Hazari. At nine he won a government scholarship for classical vocal training.
His career started in 2005 as a contestant on the reality show Fame Gurukul. He then worked behind the scenes as a music programmer and assistant to composers including Pritam, Mithoon and Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy. His Hindi playback debut was “Phir Mohabbat” (2011). “Tum Hi Ho” from Aashiqui 2 (2013) won him his first Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer and made him the most sought-after voice in Hindi film.
In 2025 he won an eighth Filmfare in the category, for “Sajni”, equalling Kishore Kumar's record. The same year he received the Padma Shri. He has two National Film Awards. Spotify has named him its most-streamed artist in India every year from 2019 to 2025. Aashiqui 2, the film behind “Tum Hi Ho”, also launched Shraddha Kapoor, who has her own profile here.
His early film work was largely with Pritam, on soundtracks including Golmaal 3, Crook and Action Replayy. “Phir Mohabbat” was from Murder 2, and “Raabta” from Agent Vinod (2012) brought him industry attention. After Aashiqui 2 came Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Chennai Express and Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela. Later hits include “Khairiyat” from Chhichhore and “Tujhe Kitna Chahne Lage” from Kabir Singh (both 2019).
