All-time blockbusters

Why it was a blockbuster

It attracted record viewership for HBO and built a large international fan base, and many critics name it one of the greatest television series. It won 59 Primetime Emmy Awards, the most for a drama series, including Outstanding Drama Series in 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019. By the final season, five of its main cast were paid $1 million an episode.

David Benioff and D. B. Weiss created it, and it ran for eight seasons from April 2011 to May 2019. Its ensemble cast has been estimated as the largest on television. In the early seasons, main characters were regularly killed off, which critics credited with keeping viewers on edge. The franchise has continued in other series. Its three main arcs, the war for the Iron Throne, the exiled heir across the sea, and the Night's Watch in the north, slowly converge across eight seasons. In 2014 several actors' contracts were renegotiated to include a seventh-season option.
