Boman Irani

Actor, comedian and director

Boman Irani is an actor and comedian in Hindi films who began his screen career unusually late. He was born in Mumbai into an Irani Zoroastrian family. His father died six months before he was born, and he grew up with dyslexia, which he eventually overcame. After school at St. Mary's he took a two-year waiter course at Mithibai College and then helped run the family bakery.

He has made more than 100 films. Munna Bhai MBBS (2003) made him a household name, and Veer-Zaara, Main Hoon Na and Lakshya (all 2004), No Entry (2005), Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Don and Khosla Ka Ghosla (all 2006) followed quickly. Later came 3 Idiots (2009), Housefull (2010), Don 2 (2011), Cocktail (2012), Jolly LLB (2013), PK and Happy New Year (both 2014), Dilwale (2015), Sanju (2018), 83 (2021), Uunchai (2022) and Dunki (2023).

In 2025 he made his directing debut with The Mehta Boys, in which he also stars. He has won a Filmfare Award and two IIFA Awards. On this guide he appears in three Rajkumar Hirani films: Munna Bhai M.B.B.S., 3 Idiots and PK.

  • 3 Idiots

Film · 2009. Three engineering students, a cruel definition of success, and a missing friend. Rajkumar Hirani directs. It is loosely drawn from Chetan Bhagat’s Five Point Someone; the film and the novelist later fought in public about how loose that debt was. The film itself is still the one families rewatch.

  • PK

  • Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.

Film · 2003. A Mumbai gangster joins medical college to win back his father’s respect. Rajkumar Hirani’s first film. Vidhu Vinod Chopra produced it. The sequel, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, came in 2006. This page is the 2003 original.
