Three engineering students, a cruel definition of success, and a missing friend. Rajkumar Hirani directs. It is loosely drawn from Chetan Bhagat’s Five Point Someone; the film and the novelist later fought in public about how loose that debt was. The film itself is still the one families rewatch.
The story
Rancho arrives at an engineering college and refuses the deal the place offers: memorize, rank, obey. Farhan and Raju are the friends who came to become what their parents could defend. The film is a comedy until the pressure stops being funny.
Rajkumar Hirani directed. Abhijat Joshi is his writing partner. It opened in 2009. Aamir Khan plays Rancho. R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi play the friends. Kareena Kapoor Khan plays Pia. Boman Irani plays the director they call Virus. It is loosely taken from Chetan Bhagat’s Five Point Someone, and the argument over that credit is part of the film’s public life.
