Rajkumar Hirani is a Hindi filmmaker whose films are usually light in tone but take on serious social issues with humour and warmth. His films have won four National Film Awards and 11 Filmfare Awards. He started as an editor and made advertising films before directing.

His first film as a professional editor was Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Mission Kashmir (2000). Chopra produced his directing debut, Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003), which was a critical and commercial hit. It won the Filmfare Award for Best Film (Critics) and earned Hirani the Filmfare for Best Screenplay. The sequel, Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006), was the second-highest grosser of its year. Both won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.

3 Idiots (2009), PK (2014), Sanju (2018) and Dunki (2023), with Shah Rukh Khan, followed. On this guide he directed Munna Bhai M.B.B.S., 3 Idiots and PK, and he often works with the same actors, Boman Irani most of all.

He was born in Nagpur, where his father ran a typing institute. His family's roots are in Mehrabpur, Sindh. He studied commerce and spent his college years in Hindi theatre. He founded the production house Rajkumar Hirani Films. Dunki opened on 21 December 2023.
