Why it was a blockbuster

It earned ₹797.34–809 crore, ranking as the third highest-grossing Indian film of 2025 and the second highest-grossing Hindi film of the year. When it left cinemas it was the eighth highest-grossing Hindi film in Indian film history.

Laxman Utekar directed it for Maddock Films, the studio's most expensive project. It was shot from October 2023 to May 2024 and released in standard and IMAX formats. A. R. Rahman composed the music. Reviews were mixed, and it drew controversy over historical accuracy. Akshaye Khanna and Rashmika Mandanna are credited in the lead cast; their character names are not listed here. Its opening scene shows Aurangzeb celebrating the news of Shivaji's death, confident the Maratha resistance will collapse, before Sambhaji launches a sudden attack on the Mughal province of Burhanpur. Pre-production began in April 2023, filming started in October 2023 and wrapped in May 2024. The lyrics were written by Irshad Kamil and Kshitij Patwardhan, and Pen Marudhar distributed it in India with Yash Raj Films handling the international release. Its success made it one of the year's biggest Hindi releases, alongside the debate over how it portrayed history.
