Why it was a blockbuster

It grossed over ₹587 crore worldwide, the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2018 and the second highest-grossing Indian film of the year. It had the biggest opening of any film in India that year, and on its third day it set the record for the highest single-day collection for a Hindi film in India.

Rajkumar Hirani directed and edited it. The idea came from conversations with Dutt himself, and the title is the nickname his mother, Nargis, used for him. Ranbir Kapoor has his own profile on this guide. The film opens with a lyricist's heavily romanticised biography of Dutt, which he rejects, before his wife Manyata brings in Winnie Diaz. Hirani said he and his team spent a long time recording Dutt's own account.
