Why it was a blockbuster
It grossed an estimated ₹1,100 crore worldwide, the second highest-grossing Indian film of 2024 and the fourth highest-grossing Telugu film. At ₹600 crore it is described as the most expensive Indian film ever made.
Nag Ashwin wrote and directed it as the first part of a planned Kalki Cinematic Universe. It was announced in 2020 as Project K and shot over three years, largely at Ramoji Film City. Prabhas plays two roles. Filming began in July 2021 after delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Nag Ashwin retained most of his technicians from earlier projects, including composer Santhosh Narayanan. The film draws on Hindu scripture, opening in the aftermath of the Kurukshetra War before moving to its future setting.
