Why it was a blockbuster

Made for ₹20 million, it grossed ₹458.1 million worldwide, the biggest film of 1989 and the highest-grossing Indian film of the 1980s. Its soundtrack sold over 5 million cassettes, His Master's Voice's best-selling album.

It was Sooraj Barjatya's directing debut and Salman Khan's first lead role, opposite Bhagyashree in her own big-screen debut. Produced by Tarachand Barjatya for Rajshri Productions, it was filmed in Mumbai and Ooty, with music by Raamlaxman. It is considered one of Khan's most iconic films. It became a cult favourite for its songs, its dialogue and the chemistry between Khan and Bhagyashree. It also established the careers of supporting actors Mohnish Bahl and Laxmikant Berde. It was dubbed into Spanish as Te Amo and into Telugu as Prema Paavuraalu in 1992. Critics praised its direction, story and performances. The story follows two young people whose friendship turns into love, complicated by the differences between their families. Asad Bhopali wrote the lyrics to Raamlaxman's songs, and those songs became as famous as the film itself. S. M. Ahale co-wrote the script with Barjatya, and the supporting cast included Alok Nath, Reema Lagoo, Rajeev Verma and Ajit Vachani.
