Why it was a blockbuster

Released on 5 August 1994, it grossed between ₹111.63 and ₹128 crore worldwide and became the highest-grossing Indian film at the time. It was the first film to gross over ₹100 crore in India, and adjusted for inflation it is the highest-grossing Indian film of the 1990s. Its soundtrack is among the best-selling Bollywood albums ever.

Sooraj Barjatya wrote and directed it for Rajshri Productions, reworking the studio's earlier film Nadiya Ke Paar (1982). Madhuri Dixit and Salman Khan star in a story built around wedding traditions and two families, and its 14 songs by Raamlaxman were an unusually large number for the time. It is credited with changing the industry, bringing new distribution methods and a turn towards less violent stories. Box Office India called it “the biggest blockbuster of the modern era”. Its Telugu dub, Premalayam, ran for over 200 days, and its songs and games became part of wedding celebrations.
