A fictional story about two real freedom fighters of the pre-independence era, Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem. Rajamouli imagines them meeting in 1920s Delhi, one a policeman serving the British, the other a tribal leader on a secret mission, and becoming friends without knowing they stand on opposite sides.

Its song “Naatu Naatu” won the Oscar for Best Original Song.
D. V. V. Danayya produced it. It marked the Telugu film debuts of Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Ray Stevenson, Alison Doody and Olivia Morris. Alia Bhatt has her own profile on this guide. It was announced in March 2018, and principal photography began that November.
