Samiya Mumtaz
Actress
Samiya Mumtaz is a film and television actress who started in theatre. On PTV she first appeared in musical shows and recurring serial roles. Her first major adult role was in the Shahid Nadeem-directed Zard Dopehar (1995).
One career turn came through hosting. While she was presenting a talk show, the writer Umera Ahmed noticed her and chose her to lead the television adaptation of Meri Zaat Zarra-e-Benishan, which aired on Geo Entertainment in 2009–10. The role brought a Best Television Actress nomination at the 10th Lux Style Awards. She has since played a selfless mother in Maaye Ni and appeared in serials such as Yaariyan.
Her harshest role became one of her most praised. As the short-tempered, abusive Rasheeda in Sadqay Tumhare (2014) she won a Hum Award. She has two Hum Awards and three Lux Style nominations. On this guide she appears in two Mohammed Ehteshamuddin dramas, Sadqay Tumhare and Udaari.
She also played the title role, Maryam, in Ali Ki Ammi. In the 2022 mystery Sang-e-Mah she played Zarsanga, a character loosely based on Gertrude. Her film debut was Afia Nathaniel's Dukhtar (2014), followed by Jami's Moor (2015). Her mother, Khawar Mumtaz, chaired the National Commission on the Status of Women from 2013 to 2019. Her father, Kamil Khan Mumtaz, is a leading architect and writer.
