Raj and Simran meet on a European trip. Her father has already promised her to someone else. Aditya Chopra’s film, produced by Yash Raj, is the romantic template a generation of Hindi cinema copied, including the rule that the father has to say yes.
The story
Simran’s father has already promised her to his friend’s son in Punjab. On a European trip before that wedding she meets Raj, who is careless until he isn’t. The film’s rule, which later films copied until it became a joke, is that the father has to agree.
Aditya Chopra directed. Yash Raj produced it. It opened on 20 October 1995. Shah Rukh Khan plays Raj. Kajol plays Simran. Amrish Puri plays Baldev Singh. It is the romantic template of the 1990s, and it played in one Mumbai cinema for years after films were supposed to leave.
