Why it was a blockbuster
Against a budget of ₹60 crore it grossed ₹691.08 crore worldwide, ₹625.54 crore of it in India, as of 14 September 2023. It became the fourth highest-grossing Indian film of 2023 and the tenth highest-grossing Hindi film of all time, despite mixed reviews.
Anil Sharma directed it, with Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel and Utkarsh Sharma returning from the 2001 film. Its success came twenty-two years after the original, which is also on this guide. Simrat Kaur, Gaurav Chopra and Manish Wadhwa are credited in the main cast; their character names are not listed here because the source does not pair them. It quickly topped global viewership charts when it reached streaming. On Rotten Tomatoes, 17% of 12 critics' reviews are positive, a reminder that its record was built by audiences rather than critics. It returns to the period setting of the original, moving the story from Partition to the 1971 war.
