Why it was a blockbuster

It grossed over ₹1.33 billion worldwide and became the highest-grossing Hindi film of its time, overtaking Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!. It sold over 50 million tickets in India, the second most-watched Indian film since the 1980s after Baahubali 2. Box Office India put its adjusted domestic gross at ₹4.86 billion as of 2017.

It was loosely inspired by the real story of Boota Singh, and released on the same day as Lagaan. The soundtrack by Uttam Singh, with lyrics by Anand Bakshi, was one of the year's most successful. Its sequel, Gadar 2, followed in 2023 and is also on this guide. Principal photography took place across North India, with cinematography by Najeeb Khan and production design by Nitin Desai. Critics praised its dramatic intensity, action and performances, particularly those of Deol, Patel and Amrish Puri, though some found it melodramatic.
