Why it was a blockbuster

It grossed about $2.2 billion worldwide against an $80 million budget. It became the highest-grossing animated film, the highest-grossing non-English film, the highest-grossing film in a single territory, and the first animated film to pass $2 billion. It was the top film of 2025 and the fifth-highest-grossing film at the time.

Jiaozi wrote and directed it. At ¥600 million it is China's most expensive animated film, well past the previous record of ¥200 million. It opened on the first day of Chinese New Year. It also overtook The Jungle Book (1967) as the animated film with the most tickets sold. Its record list includes becoming the first adult animated film to top the animated chart. The designs of the underwater demon creatures were inspired by early Chinese images of mythical beasts, with curved tusks typical of eastern monsters. Its English-language version cast Michelle Yeoh as Lady Yin.
