Why it was a blockbuster
It grossed between ₹1,642 and ₹1,800 crore worldwide, becoming the second highest-grossing film in India and the fourth highest-grossing Indian film worldwide at the time of its release.
Sukumar wrote and directed it as the sequel to Pushpa: The Rise (2021). Part of it was first shot back to back with the original, but Sukumar revised the story before the main shoot. Devi Sri Prasad composed the music. Made on a budget of ₹400–500 crore, it is among the most expensive Indian films, and it recorded the highest first-day gross for an Indian film, ₹275–294 crore. It was released in standard, IMAX, 4DX, D-Box and PVR ICE formats, and a sequel, Pushpa 3: The Rampage, is in development. Pushpa 2 itself was officially announced in December 2021, shortly before the first film's release, and was later rebranded from Pushpa 2 to Pushpa 2: The Rule. It was released in a 200-minute theatrical cut, and a 224-minute extended version followed. Allu Arjun, Rashmika Mandanna and Fahadh Faasil all return from the first film.
