A team of doctors at a Karachi hospital, followed through their shifts and their private lives. At the centre are Dr Ahmer Ansari, a reserved senior surgeon who is still grieving his foster father, and Dr Zoya Ali Khan, a young doctor whose impulsive warmth keeps colliding with his discipline. Their arguments on the ward slowly turn into something else.
It ran from 27 January 1987 to 19 May 1987, 17 episodes in all.
All-time blockbusters
Dhoop Kinare predates audited ratings in Pakistan, so there is no ratings figure to quote. Its standing rests on reputation: it is described as one of the all-time favourite shows in Pakistan, it kept its appeal through two decades of re-runs, and it was also watched and admired across the border in India. It is credited with making Rahat Kazmi and Marina Khan the most sought-after stars on Pakistani television.
It belongs to the run of PTV Karachi serials written by Haseena Moin that defined 1980s television: smart dialogue, working women at the centre, and romance carried by sparring rather than melodrama. Sahira Kazmi directed it, and Rahat Kazmi, her husband, played the lead. Marina Khan and Badar Khalil also appear in Tanhaiyaan, another Haseena Moin classic on this guide. The production ran on a tight budget; Sajid Hassan, one of the leads, was not paid for his role. The serial was later shown in India on SET India and remade there by Sony Entertainment Television. In 2020 PTV Home brought it back daily from 3 to 15 May in its PTV Gold Hour slot, more than three decades after the first broadcast.
