Why it was a blockbuster

Waris aired from PTV Lahore every Saturday from 29 December 1979 to 22 March 1980, before audited ratings, and is described as an acclaimed mega hit. Its standing as one of the defining serials of Pakistani television comes from that reputation rather than a published figure, and this page does not invent one.

It was written by the poet and dramatist Amjad Islam Amjad and directed by Nusrat Thakur and Ghazanfer Ali. Its subject, feudal power in rural Punjab and the families who serve and fight it, set a template that many later serials followed. Mehboob Alam's Chaudhry Hashmat and Abid Ali's Dilawar are among its most remembered performances. The rivalry inside the family is as sharp as any outside threat. Chaudhry Yaqub wants his father's entire estate and tries to set his son Anwar against Niaz, using Mauladad, a hard man employed by Anwar for abductions and worse. The planned dam raises the stakes of who will control the land.
