Why it was a blockbuster
It became the highest-grossing Pakistani film and the highest-grossing Punjabi-language film worldwide, with reported earnings of over Rs. 400 crore by August 2023. With a reported budget of $4.6 million, it was also described as Pakistan's most expensive film production at the time. It opened in China in May 2026.
Bilal Lashari announced the project in 2013 and developed it as a new adaptation of characters Nasir Adeeb created for the 1979 film Maula Jatt, not a direct remake. Filming ran from January 2017 to June 2019, and release was held up by a copyright dispute with the 1979 film's producer and then by the COVID-19 pandemic. Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan have their own profiles on this guide. The film was shot mostly outdoors, with only a few studio sets, and bad weather added to the production delays. Reviewers praised its scale, direction and action sequences, while criticism focused on pacing, story structure and some performances. It is in Punjabi, which made its record the biggest for any Punjabi-language film worldwide.
